Yannis Ifantis, Poems, (Translated from the Greek by Yannis Goumas)

LESSON

For ten years the Achaeans
stormed Troy —
as spermatozoa storm an ovum
as souls storm the sun
and bats the moon — as
for ten years the Achaeans
stormed Troy.

And on the tenth, the lucky
leap year
that wretched wooden horse
forced its way in like a penis
and the Achaeans conquered Troy.

So what?

CIRCE

She reckoned it would do her good to get out. So she opened the fridge
unhooked her flesh, put in on
glanced at herself in the moon
hanging by the mouth of the cave
and proceeded downhill.
— Where is she going?
— She’s coming to throw acorns at you, mates!

Yorgos Markopoulos, Poems (Translated from the Greek by Yannis Goumas)

THE BAND

The band marched along the provincial esplanade,
sounding martial airs. A boy of fourteen,
in a wide hat and the proper uniform,
playing the trombone, didn’t notice the turning ahead.

When the band wheeled, the boy continued on
with his wide hat and trombone.

MEMORY AGES

I thirst like a parched river.

Your hands, solid stones,
block the riverbed.
A wind, I try prying them with jokes,
now devious, now reckless like a river.

You laugh. Your laughter: two glasses smashing on a desolate shore.
Then you get cross. A shot across the meadows.
Your voice breaks harshly.

If I had died, you wouldn’t have met me.

If you hadn’t left your matches that day
at the station or on the train, you wouldn’t have met me.

Well, had you not left our house
for good that night,
having slipped on your dress, without underwear,
I wouldn’t be a wind now raging with envy.

That’s the way men are:
some mountains, some knives.

And everything ends here,
and here the unforeseen will happen.

Between a final cigarette and night
memory ages,
the voice of a friend fades out
and misunderstanding ceases.

cutting the hand means hospital

in my book i draw a triangle.
on the upper corner: god; on the left one: my cat;
on the right: the pencil.
it’s a magical triangle
because
in one of my memory’s elongations
undesirable
the lines unbend and slacken and move to and fro
and god becomes a black priestess, my cat a panther,
my pencil a fountain pen.

the ravenous panther desires the priestess.
the indelible fountain pen pays him off.
thus the edges disappear
and only the female
is saved
ignorant of power
winning a battle she was unaware of.

a white troupe was my lot.
perhaps a gift of necessity,
with its rod now obliging me to
act the part of a madwoman.
unrehearsed
i abandon myself in something that gallops i throw away my medicines i tear up my miraculous papers, you are a hideout  Grotta Azzura  and something like a line traces another crooked one, there’s something wrong with this shape a diabolic triangle  it cannot be drawn.
